Brent's First Cibola High School Track Meet

Friday, March 4, 2005

Brent, the anchor, brought his relay team from behind to easily win the 4 x 200 relay.

Brent was very successful at Cibola's first JV track meet. He won every event he ran/jumped in. Other high schools participating in the meet were Manzano, Valley, Sandia, and St. Pius. Brent's coach limited each athlete to three events. Brent did the high jump, the 4 x 100 relay, and the 4 x 200 relay.

Brent's teams won both relay races. It was really fun to see him back in track after a successful year in 7th grade (he won first place in the All-City High Jump event with a jump of 5'2" but was too injured to sprint!).

Brent and his pal Brandon Simpson wait for the 4 x 100 to begin. The runner before Brent fell behind leaving Brent some ground to make up. Brent comes from wayyyy behind to beat a fellow Cibola Cougar runner. Brent ALMOST cleared 6'1".

Brent easily beat his competition by jumping 5'7" (the closest athlete to him cleared 5'4"). They kept him going to see how high he could jump. He just barely missed at 6'1". The following series of five pictures are of him winning at 5'7". After the pictures, you'll see a link to a short movie of him actually clearing 5'10" (by the way...Brent is only 5'8" or 5'9").

Brent drew quite a crowd as he continued his jumps. Right after he cleared 5' 10" the judges yelled out to Cibola's coach: "Why isn't this kid on varsity?" To which the coach answered: "He just finished basketball and has only practiced THREE days! Plus, he's a freshman!"...LOL. Brent's coach is working on his form (which isn't the greatest yet). He told Brent he should be REALLY good when improves his form!

NOTE: The state qualifying mark for AAAAA is 6'2"; the state record is 7'0".

Brent starts his jump. This was his first attempt at 5'7". Almost there! He's UP! And easily clears 5'7" to beat his competitors!

Short Movie: See Brent's winning jump (5'10")
