Boys Basketball: Cougars Roll Past Bengals

From Journal Reports

Welcome back, Cory Miller. And hello, Rio Rancho.
Miller, Cibola's top sharpshooter, returned to lineup after a two-week absence to score 15 points, and senior guard Derek Apodaca scored 11 of his 20 points in the third quarter as the Cougars rolled Gallup 66-48 in the District 1-5A boys basketball semifinals Friday night.
Cibola (21-6) never trailed against the Bengals, and the win earned the Cougars another shot at Rio Rancho (18-8). The rivals are scheduled to meet for the 1-5A title at 7 tonight. The Rams were 3-0 against the Cougars in the regular season after having beaten Cibola only once in the previous eight seasons.
Miller separated his right (shooting) shoulder in the second of those three games against Rio Rancho on Feb. 9.
His smooth stroke looked none the worse for wear, as he was 3-of-5 from beyond the arc.
But it was Apodaca who helped Cibola blow this game wide open in the third quarter. He scored nine points in the first four minutes of the second half as the Cougars opened a 46-26 lead.
Ever persistent, Gallup closed to 11 points with 51/2 minutes left. However, a 3-pointer by Cibola's Clinton Carroll moments later stopped Gallup's momentum for good.
Jon Marc Sowers led Gallup (14-14) with 16 points. Cibola's tight defense limited point guard Patrick Chee to five points and six total shots.
The Bengals, who haven't qualified for a state tournament since 1985, won't learn their fate until the 5A seeding committee meets Sunday.
