They’re off and running.
More than 30 schools participated in the 2007 Lobo Invitational cross
country meet Saturday, including Cibola, St. Pius, Valley and West Mesa.
The Cibola boys in particular had an exceptional outing, placing third
out of 33 teams.
Cougar head coach Kenny Henry said he didn’t know what to expect going
into the race.
“It was our first meet, so I was just kind of curious. I felt like we
had the ability to finish that high, but still I was curious,” he said.
The Cougar boys tallied 147 points to finish behind only Albuquerque
Academy (50) and Los Alamos (119).
Henry said Academy is nationally ranked and Los Alamos is a regional
power, so he considered third place a significant achievement.
“For us to be in the mix with teams like that put a smile on our faces,”
the coach said.
With a time of 16 minutes, 26 seconds, Cibola’s Christopher Montoya
placed 12th overall in the 229-runner field. His teammates Vincent Montoya,
Thomas Debenedittis, Josh Clark, Josh Plank and Jesse Darling ran in a tight
pack and all finished in the top 50 overall. St. Pius’ Kevin Burnett led all
West Side runners in the boys race, placing seventh overall and helping the
Sartans to a 10th-place team finish. West Mesa, led by Joshua Dominguez,
earned 11th place as a team. Valley finished 33rd in the boys team
standings. In the girls’ race, Valley’s Elba Hoguin turned in a solid
individual performance, placing eighth out of 210 runners. As a team, the
Vikings placed 23rd.
In girls team standings, St. Pius placed 14th and Cibola took 16th.
FOOTBALL: Cibola trounced visiting Piedra Vista, 41-14 Saturday
at Milne Stadium.
The Cougars dominated from the outset and had a 35-0 lead heading into
the fourth quarter.
Cibola did most of the damage on the ground, running for four of its six
touchdowns.
David Vargas, Chase Bennison and Michael Mascarenas rushed for a score
apiece, as did quarterback Jonathan Mader.
Mader also threw touchdown passes to Ryan Williams and Brandon Simpson.
As productive as the Cougars were on offense, they were even more
impressive on defense, keeping the Panthers scoreless until the game’s final
10 minutes.
Cibola, now 2-0, will be back at Milne at 7 p.m. Friday for a game
against St. Pius.
