Cheryl's Kryptonite Devotional

Here is the front and back of my devotional handout. The "Kryptonite" is broken

pieces of lime-flavored rock candy.

NOTE: I used 2" x 3" jewelry ziploc-style bags I bought at a craft store. The rock candy was purchased online at www.bulkfoods.com. I'm sure you can buy rock candy in smaller quantities somewhere else. I needed to make 250 handouts. Total cost, not counting printer paper and computer ink, was about $22 (8 cents per handout).

The Story of Superman

Rocketed to earth by his parents Jor-El and Lara when a cataclysmic explosion obliterates their planet, Krypton, baby Kal-El is raised as Clark Kent by Jonathan and Martha Kent in Smallville, U.S.A. As a teenager, Clark discovers and hones his "super" powers.

True to the legend, if exposed to Kryptonite, Superman instantly weakens and prolonged exposure to it could, quite possibly, cause his death.

The Kryptonite Object Lesson (Avoiding Temptation)

Just as Superman weakens as he gets near Kryptonite, we weaken when we get near temptation. It doesn't matter how strong you think you are, everyone has weaknesses. It's at the moment you think you are not vulnerable that you are open to attack. If you only try to resist, you will lose. Imagine Superman just trying to resist kryptonite rather than running away from it. It would kill him.

Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

—Matthew 26:41

If you're worried about where to run, don't worry, God promised to make a way of escape for you:

…but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

—1 Corinthians 10:13

The enemy always attacks us at our weakest point. Luke 4:2 mentions that Jesus was hungered—So what does the devil say to Him in verse 3?

"…If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.”

He tempts Jesus where Jesus is most vulnerable. The enemy is pretty predictable. If your struggle is with sexual temptation, that's where the enemy is going to attack. If your struggle is with anger, addiction, pride, or depression, that's where the enemy is going to attack.
