Dad's Favorite Apple Pie
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 tsp apple pie spice
2 T flour
5 cups peeled, cored, and thinly sliced Jonathan Apples
9-inch pie crust (may use link to recipe or store bought crust)
Mix sugar, apple pie spice, flour, and apples together in a large mixing bowl. Put mixture into unbaked pie shell. Cover with the following topping:
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup flour
1/3 cup margarine
Combine sugar and flour. Cut in margarine until crumbly. Sprinkle over apples to cover completely. Bake on a foil lined cookie sheet at 350° for 1 hour or until lightly browned.
NOTE: These pies freeze well if wrapped tightly first in plastic and then in foil. From what I've researched, it is better to start the pie frozen than to thaw it out and then cook it. Just make sure your pie plate can handle the temperature change--aluminum can, pyrex can't. To cook frozen pie, Preheat oven to 400°. Place frozen pie on foil lined cookie sheet (to catch any run over of juice) and cook for 20 minutes. Reduce heat to 350° for 40-60 minutes or until pie is bubbling around the edges (and rises slightly). If crumb topping starts to brown before apples bubble, Reduce heat by 25 degrees or cover loosely with foil.
